| December 2004 Glasses one day, great vision the next. That is the instantaneous benefit of laser refractive surgery at Christchurch’s Laservision Eye Clinic. Over the last 10 years, millions of people worldwide have had their quality of life enhanced through LASIK surgery. The laser treatment, which literally takes seconds, gives a lifelong result. Laservision marketing manager, Vicky Coates, said that Laservision Eye Clinic offers a free assessment where a person’s suitability and expectations are discussed. “The majority of people will derive great benefits from laser surgery, but there is a small minority where the treatment is not appropriate. An assessment is a good opportunity to discuss these issues and allay worries anyone might have about the treatment.” People seeking laser surgery rank from mid to late 20s through to their 60s. The reasons are wide and varied. “It’s a lifestyle choice,” says Vicky. “Some people may break their glasses and decide to have surgery rather than replace their glasses, others find contact lenses irritating, or find glasses restrictive when taking part in sport. One of the great things about laser treatment is that it usually results in only minor discomfort after treatment and this quickly passes.” Laservison Eye Clinic’s level of service has been further boosted recently with the investment of over $1 million in the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q System, widely recognised as one of the most advanced laser treatments in the world for LASIK eye surgery. On arrival at the surgery for treatment, the patient is given a mild oral sedative to relax. The procedure itself takes about 20 minutes with the actual laser treating the cornea for only a few seconds. After treatment, shields are placed over the eyes to prevent the patient rubbing them subconsciously or while asleep. In total the whole procedure, from walking in the door to leaving, takes about 90 minutes. Patients then return the next morning and the ophthalmologist again checks the treated eyes. Appointments are then made for the following week, month, three months and six months. “The arrival of the Allegretto has been of significant benefit to our clients. The small numbers that return for minor enhancements has decreased from 12% to approximately 3%. LASIK surgery is recognised around the world as one of the safest and most accurate ways of correcting sight problems,” she said. Source: The Press, December 2004 | | ![]() |
