Heather sees motherhood through new eyes.

Motherhood was the spur Christchurch’s Heather Burnby needed to undergo the life-changing experience of laser eye surgery.

Heather had been short-sighted for 20 years and the hassles of contact lenses and glasses especially troubled her when she wanted to participate in her favourite form of exercise, swimming. Now, she revels in joining 14-month-old Georgia in the pool for her swimming lessons, knowing that she doesn’t have to worry about her contact lenses floating away.

“I decided before Christmas that I wanted to have the laser treatment for quite a few reasons. I hadn’t been able to put contacts in while I was pregnant because I had quite a lot of trouble with carpal tunnel syndrome and I didn’t like wearing glasses all day. Then when I had Georgia, I thought how nice it would be to look at my next baby with my own eyes.'

“When I saw the staff at Laservision, they were fantastic – really warm and supportive. They even looked after Georgia while I had my consultation!”

The procedure was an immediate success as Heather found that night by peeking through the patches she had to wear for a few hours. “I was so excited because I could see the TV and since then I’ve never looked back. I didn’t even have one uncomfortable night.”

Her surgery coincided with her return to work as a trust account manager at Lane Neave. She said it’s an enormous advantage not to have to juggle her schedule to fit in contacts as she gets herself and her daughter ready in the mornings.

She’s looking forward to being able to make the most of a snorkelling holiday in Australia or Fiji later this year and said her improved vision is also a boost for her self-esteem. “When you become a mother, you still want to feel good about your appearance and not look `mumsy’. Since I’ve had the surgery, I can’t believe how wonderful it is to be able to see clearly.”
