Danny relishes seeing more of the great outdoors.

West Coaster Danny Sparrow would not be doing the farming and silverculture (planting and pruning pine trees) he loves, if he had not undergone laser surgery.

The former Aucklander, who also lived in Christchurch for 25 years before finding his favourite lifestyle on the Coast, had been short-sighted for most of his life. He had worn contact lenses for so long, they had made his eyes dry and sore. “They were always like two little stones in my eyes. It got to the point where they were the last thing I put in before jumping in the van and the first thing I took out when I got home,” Danny recalled.

As well as running his own pruning crew, which works in forests throughout Westland, he is kept busy with a beef farm. He couldn’t wear his glasses for logging and pruning and they weren’t suitable for night-time farm work either, especially when it was raining. His sister Julie urged him to contact Laservision to discuss surgery, which had worked well for her about four years previously. “I don’t really like operations and I wasn’t at all keen after seeing a clip about it on TV. But I came over to Christchurch for a consultation one morning and they said they could do the surgery that night.

“I didn’t have time to be nervous. If I could liken it to having your finger pricked with a needle, that would be more painful than the laser surgery. Dr Dallison and all the staff were brilliant and very professional and I wish I’d had it done years ago.”

Danny used lots of eyedrops for the next few weeks but said it is a huge relief that nothing else has touched his eyes since. He said his eyesight now is “a miracle”, and he can enjoy the spectacular views while he is working, as well as his favourite outdoor pursuits such as hunting, fishing, surfing and swimming.
