| Surgery hits the bulls-eye for Bondy. More FM producer Chris Bond (Bondy) was all eyes when he found himself in a field with an 850kg bull. Bondy, who had endured seven years of being short-sighted, had agreed to square off with some prime Canterbury beef because he was so keen to have surgery at Laservision Eye Clinic, Merivale. His workmates, breakfast hosts Simon Barnett and Gary McCormick, insisted he would have to smack the bull on its rump on live radio if he wanted his eyes lasered by Laservision. “They got the idea from the movie Wildhogs where some guys do a bike trip across the US,” Bondy says. “In one scene the guys take turns to go into a bullring and gradually the bull gets pretty mad. “There was no shortage of people here in Canterbury volunteering their bulls but as I’m not used to being anywhere near cattle, it was a nerve-wracking experience. I’d been warned that if it put its head down, it was getting ready to charge me so I wasn’t taking any chances.” | | ![]() |
| Once he accomplished his mission, Bondy made a spectacular leap over the farmer’s gate where his amused colleagues were waiting. The stunt was filmed and the resulting YouTube video has had thousands of viewings. Initially, Bondy considered eye surgery as daunting as facing the bull, despite hearing the accounts of half a dozen friends, who were very enthusiastic about laser treatment. “But when I met the staff at Laservision they explained the procedure so clearly I knew it was going to be worth it. I felt 100% safe from the time I first walked in the door for the free assessment. All the staff were extremely professional throughout the whole process.” |
| The results have been stunning. “It’s life-changing. Suddenly you can see things you haven’t been able to see for years.” He has always hated putting in and removing contact lenses because his eyes are so sensitive. The alternative, switching between glasses and sunglasses, was also irritating. The days of having rain disrupt his golf game (he has a two handicap) are also behind him, although old habits die hard. “The day I had my protective covers removed from my eyes I walked out to the car. It was raining and my hands shot up to form a veranda like a roof above my eyebrows to cover my eyes – you just hate getting raindrops on your glasses. It took a good 15 seconds before I realised I didn’t need to do that any more – the hands dropped down and I started laughing out loud.” | ![]() |
Bondy certainly needs his eyes wide open to cope with the array of embarrassing challenges the breakfast team dreams up for him, such as persuading a bus full of early morning commuters to join him in a song. Despite this, he reckons working at More FM is “the ultimate job,” where he’s paid to have fun. Sadly, Laservision failed with one potential miracle – improving Bondy’s spelling, which is so appalling it attracts plenty of on-air ribbing.
