Ayline Fergusson no longer dreads trying to perform everyday tasks in the rain on her partner’s South Canterbury farm.

Ayline’s work centres on a cropping and sheep farm at Bluecliffs south of Timaru. For years she has found jobs such as lambing tricky because her glasses got wet and she couldn't see properly. "I've been hoping that someone would invent glasses with little wipers on them," she joked.

She experienced similar problems with her glasses fogging up when working in warm conditions such as the woolshed. “It was also a nuisance when I was playing golf and I had no hope of finding my ball when it went into a tree.”

Ayline, who wore glasses for about 13 years, had heard some favourable comments about laser surgery. “It finally got to the point where I realised there were so many things that I do that were a pain because I couldn’t see properly.”

She had laser surgery done on both eyes at Laservision Eye Clinic in Christchurch in May 2005 and was able to drive herself home to the farm the next day. She says the results are “absolutely brilliant. I’ll be out in the garden now and I can read what it says on the spray can. I can work out in the rain and it’s marvellous because it no longer affects my vision.”

She was also impressed with the care she received at Laservision before and after the operation. “Nothing was a problem and they were happy to answer any questions, even when I rang over the Easter break.”
